The UFC is set to return to the fighting city of Philadelphia this Saturday with two title fights, as UFC 330 – Makhachev vs. Machado Garry will see the two headliners vie for the Welterweight title while Mackenzie Dern defends the Strawweight title against Canada’s own Gillian Robertson.

Makhachev vs. Machado Garry – Dagestan vs. Ireland 2

There have been 100 numbered events since the biggest fight in UFC history: Khabib vs. McGregor at UFC 229. That matchup saw the undefeated Khabib test his legendary Dagestani wrestling against McGregor’s still-immortal striking, after the latter took a nearly two-year layoff in order to famously fight Floyd Mayweather in boxing. 

Almost a decade later, we find Khabib’s star pupil taking on another Irish product in Ian Machado Garry, who is 17-1 with victories over the likes of Belal Muhammad, Carlos Prates, Michael Venom Page, and Goeff Neal. Machado Garry also gave Shavkat Rakhmonov the toughest fight of his career (and only win via decision), going the full 25 minutes and limiting Rakhmonov to just 2/10 on takedown attempts. 

Machado Garry is not the striker McGregor was, but he is a much more polished wrestler, and as a Chute Boxe product he has excellent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Now, to be clear, Islam made short work of Garry’s training partner Charles Oliveira at UFC 280, so it remains to be seen what adjustments the team will make to give Machado Garry the best chance at a different result. 

Dern vs. Robertson – True North Strong & Gold?

Gillian Robertson will be looking to pay off a nearly decade-long career in the UFC when she makes the walk on Saturday night. The 31-year-old has a chance to become the first Canadian woman to have UFC Gold wrapped around her waist. 

Robertson, known as “The Savage,” is currently riding a five-fight win streak, including a TKO of longtime contender Marina Rodriguez last May before taking home a decision-win over former title challenger Amanda Lemos in March. 

Standing in Robertson’s way is champion Mackenzie Dern, who is looking to defend the title for the first time since knocking off Virna Jandiroba for the vacant belt back in October. However, former champion Weili Zhang will likely be ready for whoever comes out on top Saturday, as the 37-year-old never actually lost the belt. Zhang had vacated the title in order to move up to 125 and challenge Valentina Shevchenko, where she was ultimately unsuccessful. 

UFC 330 Best Bets

Makhachev vs. Machado Garry – Method Of Victory: Islam Makhachev by Submission +205

Makhachev proved that his wrestling chops and strength could translate to Welterweight against Jack Della Maddalena (JDM), as he controlled the former champ for 19/25 minutes en route to a dominant 50-45 decision win. Of course, JDM doesn’t have Machado Garry’s wrestling or BJJ credentials, essentially attempting to turtle-up and dodge submission attempts for five full rounds. 

I do not expect the same approach from Machado Garry, who is likely well aware that a loss to Makhachev will put him multiple fights away from another chance with the Welterweight title picture quickly stacking up. Not to mention, Makhachev has a proven track record submitting BJJ practitioners, with submission wins over Moicano, Poirier, and Oliveira being proof of his dominance in the realm of grappling. I don’t expect Makhachev to be interested in a striking bout with the long, lanky Irishman, and once he gets it to the ground we know exactly what he can do. While I see the moneyline as fairly priced with Makhachev being a -350 as of writing, I like the value better in taking a stab at one of the UFC’s best wrestlers to find his way to a submission at better than 2-1 odds.

Dern vs. Robertson – Will The Fight Go The Distance? No +115

With two high-level finishers meeting up for 25 minutes, I’m inclined to lean towards someone finding a finish in the co-main event. Dern is rightfully the favourite here, she is the one with all the five-round experience, has fought the stronger strength of schedule, and has shown improvements in her standup game by outstriking the likes of Angela Hill and Loopy Godinez in recent years. 

In contrast, this will be Robertson’s first five-round fight in the UFC, and while she has looked strong at Strawweight (6-1 with three finishes) this will certainly be her toughest test yet. 

Robertson has an excellent submission game and flashed strong work from mount in her TKO win over Rodriguez last year. Given her lack of five-round experience, it’s reasonable to think her best path to victory is winning via an early finish. Combine that with Dern’s superior experience, and I can also easily envision Mackenzie finally getting her arms around the neck of an exhausted Robertson late in the fight. Overall, these women have 46 combined career bouts, and exactly half have seen a finish on either side. At a plus number, I’m willing to take a chance on that figure jumping above the 50-percent mark.
