Unlike previous seasons, the Toronto Maple Leafs enter the 2026-2027 season with a lot of unknowns. Last season was a disappointment; there is no denying that. In the offseason, the organization underwent a significant makeover, with new leadership and a brand-new face of the franchise.

2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs Season Recap

It was a surprisingly mediocre season for Toronto. The Maple Leafs finished with a 32-36-14 record and 78 points, placing eighth in the Atlantic Division and missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2016.

This was a stark contrast to 2024-2025, when the Leafs won 52 games and finished with 108 points before being knocked out in the second round of the playoffs. It was also the final season behind the bench for Head Coach Craig Berube, who was let go at the end of the year.

What Is Different for the Maple Leafs This Season?

The biggest difference is simply how different the team is both on and off the ice. 

At the top, General Manager Brad Treliving was dismissed and replaced by John Chayka. Berube was replaced by Jim Hiller after two seasons behind the Leafs’ bench. Several other executive-level positions were replaced, including Assistant GMs Hayley Wickenheiser, Daryl Metcalf, and Mark Leach. Leaf legend Mats Sundin was brought in as the team’s Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations. 

But perhaps the most significant difference for the team will come on the ice. Against the odds, the Maple Leafs won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and selected Gavin McKenna first overall. McKenna is a highly-regarded forward who gives the Leafs an immediate offensive threat alongside Auston Matthews and William Nylander. 

Toronto also addressed its revolving door in the crease by signing Sergei Bobrovsky to a three-year contract. Despite being 37-years-old, Bobrovsky is coming off two consecutive Stanley Cup victories with the Florida Panthers before last season. 

Toronto Maple Leafs 2026-27 Betting Outlook

The Maple Leafs are difficult to evaluate heading into the season, which can make them an appealing team for bettors who think they have a clear insight into the team’s offseason changes. 

If the Leafs can bounce back on the strength of Bobrovsky and McKenna, then taking a long-shot bet on them to win the Atlantic Division, or even the Eastern Conference Championship, could provide some long-term value. 

McKenna will be a heavy favourite to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie, but the value in that market may improve once the season starts.
