It’s been quite the World Cup for Canada, and Canadian fans are hoping that this Cinderella run continues when they take on Morocco in the Group of 16.

Canada’s FIFA World Cup 2026 journey has already produced the country’s greatest football performance and has no doubt created millions of new soccer fans across the nation. The victory over South Africa was historic, but the challenge only gets tougher from here.

Morocco will pose Canada’s biggest challenge so far in the 2026 World Cup. This battle-tested nation moved on after a stunning and dramatic penalty shootout victory over The Netherlands, a team that reached the World Cup Finals as recently as 2010.

With a place in the quarterfinals on the line, expect a tactical battle between Canada’s high-energy pressing game and Morocco’s disciplined defensive structure. Here’s everything you need to know before the kickoff of the biggest soccer game in Canadian history.

Canada is Riding a Wave of Confidence

Canada has continued to exceed expectations throughout its miracle run.

The Canadian squad advanced from the Group stage in second place in Group B following a convincing 6-0 victory over Qatar, a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a 2-1 loss to Switzerland.

In its first World Cup knockout game in history, Canada waited until the 92nd minute to bury a shot to secure the victory and move on to the Round of 16. Canada’s performance was composed and in control, rather than relying only on its speed and ability to move the ball in transition. This discipline will be necessary if Canada has any chance of defeating Morocco and advancing to the quarter-finals.

The midfield has done an excellent job in controlling the tempo of the game and hasn’t missed a beat since Ismael Kone has been out of the lineup after being injured against Qatar.

If Canada has a hope of beating Morocco, it will need full buy-in from the entire squad. It must control the game at every level, stay disciplined, and capitalize on any chance it gets to score. Even with a perfect game, Morocco is the type of team that can frustrate opponents while also being able to strike when given the opportunity.

Morocco remains one of the tournament’s toughest opponents

Morocco isn’t often immediately thought of as a soccer powerhouse nation, but it has certainly been staking that claim over the past few years.

In 2022, Morocco had its best-ever finish at the World Cup, coming in fourth place. The Moroccans lost to France in the semi-finals and to Croatia in the third-place game.

After another disciplined defensive clinic put on against the Netherlands, Morocco advanced through penalties and once again demonstrated why they thrive in knockout football. The team rarely panics under pressure, remains compact defensively, and capitalizes on mistakes better than almost anyone left in the tournament.

To win, Canada cannot afford careless turnovers in midfield because Morocco transitions from defence to attack incredibly quickly. Morocco is more than happy to play a style of game that can lull their opponents into a sense of security before a fast attack in transition changes the tide of the game.

Players to watch in Canada vs. Morocco

Alphonso Davies

Few Canadian players are as dangerous to a game as Alphonso Davies. His speed and pace are truly Canada’s most important offensive weapons, and if Davies is shut down by the Moroccan defence, then Canada may have little hope for victory.

Jonathan David

Jonathan David continues to be Canada’s most reliable finisher and will need to penetrate this disciplined Moroccan defence. Even against organized defensive teams like Morocco, David can wreak havoc in the penalty box and does his best work in close quarters.

Achraf Hakimi

On the opposing side, Achraf Hakimi remains Morocco’s biggest difference-maker on either side of the ball.

The full-back contributes at both ends of the pitch, providing defensive stability while also joining attacks whenever opportunities arise. The Canadian squad will always need to be aware of when Hakimi is on the pitch.

Youssef En-Nesyri

Morocco’s striker remains dangerous whenever crosses enter the box. He has a booming shot and is capable of changing the tide of the game with a single strike. The Canadian defence will need to be on their game as En-Nesyri has made a living off of finding soft spots in defensive formations.

Canada vs. Morocco betting preview

The betting markets at Canadian sportsbooks like ToonieBet.ca already have Morocco as a fairly heavy favourite in this match. Despite this being the farthest that Canada has ever reached in the World Cup, they are not the biggest underdogs in the next round. Cape Verde (+1900), Ghana (+650), and the DR Congo (+1200) are three of those teams that are bigger underdogs than Canada.

This match will come down to which team can take advantage of their scoring opportunities. Both teams play strong defence and do not provide many clear opportunities to their opponents.

In four World Cup games so far, Canada has allowed just three goals and Morocco just four. Morocco has perhaps the most impressive game of the two teams, tying one of the tournament favourites, Brazil.

Rather than focusing on goals being scored, Canadian bettors may want to focus on betting the unders on this game.

Total Goals Over 2.5 +130Total Goals Under 2.5 -155

As always, line movement and confirmed starting lineups closer to kickoff can significantly influence betting value.

In a game that is not expected to be high-scoring, one betting market to look at is the Winning Method. With either team winning by penalties sitting at +1200 odds, these aren’t bad bets to make on what should be a defensive struggle.

Canada vs. Morocco prediction

Canada has already proven that it can hang with the world’s best teams. But the Canadians shouldn’t just be resting on their laurels. The opportunity to make it to the quarter-finals at this year’s World Cup is there for the taking.

With that said, Morocco presents as Canada’s biggest challenge of the tournament so far. This is a top-four team from the last World Cup, and they have the skill, coaching, and experience to make it there again.

As the betting market suggests, there likely won’t be many goals in this match. While all of Canada will be behind the squad, there is a reasonable chance that the Cinderella Run ends against Morocco.

The best potential bet here is the Under 2.5 goals for the match, while sprinkling some smaller bets on either team to win in penalties. Our prediction is a draw at the end of full time, with Morocco prevailing in the penalties.
