After more than a month of non-stop football, we have made it to the World Cup final. The 104th match of this year’s tournament pits Spain against Argentina. It all goes down Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET, featuring not only the top two teams in the FIFA Rankings, but also the two reigning continental champions.

Spain, 2024 Euro champs, and Argentina, the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América winners, will fight for their chance at immortality on the grandest stage of them all. Although Spain themselves only managed two shots on goal, they were much more clinical, converting both to lift them into the final.

The defensive dominance

The story of Spain’s summer has been on the defensive side of the ball. They wield the best defence in the competition and have not yet trailed in any of their matches. They’ve been extremely difficult to break down, even by some of the world’s most fearsome attacks. Thanks to the stellar goalkeeping of Unai Simón, who looks a formality to win this year’s Golden Glove, Spain has secured six clean sheets and did not concede until the quarterfinal against Belgium.

The Spanish back four of Porro, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte and Marc Cucurella have done their part, only allowing opponents 2.1 expected goals (0.3 per game), the best mark of any team in the competition.

The midfield majesty

Spain’s emphasis on midfield domination continues to pay dividends at the business end of the World Cup. When with the ball, they sit third among this summer’s competitors in average possession at 63.8% and won the possession battle against France at 51%.

Rodri and Fabián Ruiz played exceptionally in the midfield with and without the ball. Together they combined to complete 114 of 133 pass attempts (86%), moving the ball with composure and forcing gaps in the French defence for dangerous balls into the final third. When without the ball, they held firm in their defensive shape and hunted the French players in packs to turn over possession, which ultimately was the key to the midfield battle.

The French buildup from midfielders Adrien Rabiot, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Manu Koné was rendered obsolete in large part because of Rodri and Ruiz’s work rate out of possession, collectively winning 17 of 23 duels in the middle third. They smothered the French attack at every opportunity and were far and away the better midfield unit on the day.

The adequate attack

At the top end of the pitch, the Spanish attack has answered when called upon to produce goals. Mikel Oyarzabal leads the Iberians with five goals, including a first half penalty last time out, putting him three ahead of supersub Mikel Merino and wing back Porro. Young phenom Lamine Yamal found the scoresheet in Spain’s second group match against Saudi Arabia and notably has yet to add to his tally.

The Barcelona winger had been nursing a hamstring injury sustained during the club season but has started every match except for the opener versus Cabo Verde. Although he has not impacted the World Cup with his goalscoring abilities as much as many had hoped, he has made his mark in other aspects of the game, giving defensive wingbacks problems all tournament with his neat footwork and sharp football understanding. Yamal earned his side the decisive penalty against France after reacting first to a loose ball in the 18-yard box and drawing illegal contact from French left back Lucas Digne.

He will be hungry for his second World Cup goal, but beyond that he represents an everlasting threat on the wing and can change the game at any moment.

Spain’s predicted XI (4-2-3-1)

Simón

Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella

Rodri, Ruiz

Yamal, Olmo, Baena

Oyarzabal

13/14 of the last men’s and women’s Euros and World Cups have been won by the team who played their semifinal first.

Advantage Spain…? ♟️ pic.twitter.com/WHEqS7eNFS
— B/R Football (@brfootball) July 16, 2026

Argentina’s route to the World Cup final

Finished 1st in Group J (9 points, 8-1)

Defeated Cabo Verde 3-2 AET in Round of 32

Defeated Egypt 3-2 in Round of 16

Defeated Switzerland 3-1 AET in quarterfinal

Defeated England 2-1 in semifinal

Argentina left it late once again, but managed to progress to their second successive World Cup final and their seventh in history, staging yet another comeback against England 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Lionel Messi assisted on both of Argentina’s scores after falling behind in the second half, the first of which came in the 85th minute through an Enzo Fernández effort from outside the box. The second followed soon after by a close range header from an unmarked Lautaro Martínez. England, who haven’t reached the World Cup final since they won the competition in 1966, missed yet another opportunity to play for the title. They grabbed the lead shortly after the second half kickoff via Anthony Gordon’s first World Cup goal, but the “Three Lions” allowed “La Albiceleste” the time and space to pressure the England net and eventually find the crucial equalizer and winning goals.

At the end of the day, all that matters is advancing, so Argentina won’t care how they’ve gone about it. Emphatic comebacks and late drama in the knockouts are nothing new to this team. The South Americans played Cabo Verde and Switzerland into extra time in the Round of 32 and quarterfinals respectively and faced an unprecedented upset elimination trailing by two goals against Egypt late in the Round of 16.

They haven’t looked all that convincing in the past few matches, especially on the defensive end, but somehow have managed to find ways to win. This is a team that doesn’t know when they’re beat, and that makes them a dangerous opponent, even for the world’s top teams.

The Messi margin

Lionel Messi is the engine and inspiration of this team. At 39, he leads all players with 12 goals and assists so far, and his eight goals are good enough for joint-first in the Golden Boot race with Mbappé. If the tournament were to end today, the Argentine would win it on assists.

In addition, Messi holds the record for goals scored at the World Cup with an astounding 21 to date. In Wednesday’s contest he led the comeback with his poised demeanor and elite football brain, orchestrating an all out attack against the defensive-minded England. He stepped up when his country was against the ropes and proved once again why he is considered the greatest player ever.

Outside of Messi, Argentina’s attack features other playmakers who will no doubt pose a scoring threat against Spain. The aforementioned Lautaro Martinez started the first four matches for Argentina at striker but has since been used as a substitute. The Inter Milan marksman has scored in back-to-back matches coming off the bench, including the stoppage-time winner versus England; he now sits on three goals for the tournament. Julián Alvarez represents another fine option up front for manager Lionel Scaloni, and has started the past three matches in place of Martinez at the striker role.

👉 Before Leo Messi, the World Cup record holders were:
🇩🇪 Most goals — Miroslav Klose.
🇦🇷 Most assists — Diego Maradona.
🇧🇷 Most goal contributions — Pelé.
🇦🇷 Most dribbles — Diego Maradona.
🇦🇷 Most chances created — Diego Maradona.
🇧🇷 Most goal contributions in the knockout… pic.twitter.com/coX9ta0LIo
— Football Tweet ⚽ (@Footballtweet) July 16, 2026

The middle men

Like Spain, Argentina is a possession-minded squad and have kept the ball for 60.7% of their game minutes, sixth best among all teams this summer. Midfielders Fernández and Leandro Paredes sit at the heart of the Argentine buildup and play crucial roles in their country’s success with the ball. When Paredes is on the field, he is used primarily as a holding mid. Originally an injury doubt to start the match against England he put in an excellent shift, completing 68 of 70 passes (and averaging 111.9 accurate passes per 90 mins for the tourney) and winning 6 of 9 duels in the middle third.

Paredes’s more offensive-minded counterpart, Fernandez, has excelled in the attacking midfield role and played every single minute of each match except for the missed dead rubber group stage fixture against Jordan. He capped off his string of strong performances with perhaps his best game this tournament against England, scoring a stunning equalizer deep in the second half with a curled effort from long range, completed a staggering 82 of 84 passes and leading all players in touches with 104.

The defensive deficiencies

“La Albiceleste” have dominated their opponents in the front two thirds of the pitch, but the defensive third has let them down this summer. They have had a plethora of issues to sort out at the back all tournament, keeping just two clean sheets and averaging one conceded goal per match, and their struggles in the knockout rounds left them far too close to elimination for comfort.

This was likely a point of emphasis for the back line headlined by Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez heading into the semifinal, as England are a side that’s well capable of punishing defences when opportunities arise. Outside of the Gordon goal in the second half, the Argentine defence conceded just 0.14 expected goals and one shot on target. The game script lent well to this statistic given that England switched to an ultra defensive mindset after taking the lead. Regardless, they responded well to those critical of their defensive performances to date.

In addition, veteran goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez will look to make an impact for his country with a third clean sheet of the tournament, but that’s easier said than done. In seven matches he has prevented 1.49 fewer goals than expected, so he will need a strong showing in the final to turn this figure on its head.

Argentina predicted XI (4-1-2-1-2)

E. Coupled with Argentina’s vulnerability at the back against weaker opposition, this one seems a good fit. (Pro tip: The team that scores first has lifted the trophy 13 out of 21 times, 62%.)

Messi to score or assist (-125)

Everything flows through Messi one way or another, as indicated by his 12 goal contributions this tournament. He has won this market seven out of seven matches.

Yamal to score or assist (+120)

The plus money on this bet appeals to many looking for Lamine to make an impact at the close of an otherwise quiet tournament. Grabbing the assist adds a safety net. He will be matched up against Nicolas Tagliafico on the wing, who has looked shaky at times dealing with opposition wingers.

1H Draw (+108)

Spain have played to three first half draws in this World Cup while Argentina have one. I expect a “feeling out period” early coupled with Argentina’s penchant for late goals. With both teams looking to avoid any unnecessary risks in the opening stages, this plus money option is a fine one.

Cristian Romero to be booked (+120)

Romero is known to play with aggression and physicality. He will want to lay down a marker that nothing will come easily past the Argentina defensive shape. If it comes down to a professional foul to slow the play down late and allow Argentina to group, leave it to “Cuti” to take one for the team.

Penalty in the match? – Yes (+180)

In the VAR age, any contact in the box is heavily scrutinized. There has been a penalty in the final of the past two editions of the World Cup final and three of the past six. At another plus money payout this is worth a small investment.

World Cup final prediction

Spain are ultimately the better team and their tactical structure plays a large hand in this. They have proven time and time again how difficult it is to break their defensive block. This tournament the Spanish goalkeeper and defenders are playing with much better form than their Argentine counterparts, and as they say defence wins championships. Both sides are well capable of scoring goals and as long as Messi is on the field for his country they can never be counted out.

In what should be an entertaining final of the world’s greatest competition, I see Spain winning 1-0 in a low-scoring encounter and dethroning the champions for their second world title.

Photo illustration by Jacob Avers.
Images courtesy AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell (2), Lynne Sladky, David J.
